The State of Iowa is seeking several Architectural Historians or Historians to work as part of disaster recovery teams at the Department of Economic Development, Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, and the State Historic Preservation Office within the Department of Cultural Affairs. These positions are expected to be full-time, temporary (initially 18 month) positions hired through an outside (non-state) employment agency. A benefits package will be determined by the outside employment agency. Travel throughout the state will be required.
Job responsibilities may include: identification and evaluation of historic properties, assessment of effects to historic properties, review of federal projects for effects on historic resources, development of programmatic agreements and memoranda of agreement, and coordination of project consultation between several federal and state agencies.
Candidates must meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualifications Standards for architectural history or history, as published in Appendix A of the Code of Federal Regulations, 36 CFR Part 61 (graduate degree in architectural history, historic preservation, history, or a closely related field preferred). Preference will be given to individuals with experience identifying and evaluating historic resources in Iowa and/or the Upper Midwest, as well as those with a working knowledge of the National Historic Preservation Act, the implementing regulations for Section 106 of the Act (36 CFR Part 800), and the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. Candidates should be well-organized and able to communicate effectively with the public.
